Majelen
Living in a bus with her wife and border collie, Majelen has turned life’s adventures into the backbone of her music. The indie artist’s latest album, Stuck With You, is a patchwork of personal milestones, from backpacking escapades to building a home on wheels.
Creativity on the Road: From Proposals to Abbey Road
For Majelen, songwriting isn’t confined to a studio, it’s woven into her nomadic lifestyle. Her latest album, Stuck With You, began as a secret proposal song for her wife, Courtney — that was until Courtney beat her to the punch.
“She ended up proposing to me first, so that went out the window,” Majelen admitted. Meaning that the track then became a celebration of their love and marriage instead, featuring wedding footage in its music video.
Majelen’s creative process is deeply tied to her nomadic lifestyle. Songs emerge from horseback riding near Tamworth, backpacking abroad, or even converting a bus into a home. “It’s all moments from life over the last few years,” she explained.
To make the album even more special, it was recorded in a whirlwind two-day session at London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios.
“I sang into Ella Fitzgerald’s microphone and recorded in the same room as Pink Floyd, it was insane,” Majelen recalled. The pressure was intense, with eight-hour guitar marathons and vocal takes squeezed between sniffles from a cold.
Now, she’s ditching the prestige for practicality, recording her next album exclusively in the bus while touring Australia. “Why not? It’s funny, and it gives me time to actually think about the emotion behind the words,” she explained.
Why Regional Tours Matter
While most artists chase big-city crowds, Majelen is drawn to Australia’s smaller towns. Sold-out shows in Narooma and the Gold Coast proved regional audiences are hungry for original music.
“In smaller towns, it’s usually just cover bands or ABBA tributes,” she said. “I want to change that.” For her, touring regionally isn’t just strategic, it’s personal. “People outside capitals deserve art too.”
Life, Love, and the Loop Pedal
Between dog walks and beach stops, Majelen finds inspiration in the mundane. A recent oceanside break sparked a new song, proving creativity strikes even mid-tour.
She credits her wife, Courtney, as both muse and manager. “Courtney knows my music better than anyone, so if she hears a bad note, I redo it,” Majelen admitted. Balancing work and life is tricky, but boundaries are forming. “Non-work time is important. We’re working on it.”
Fans can expect more bus-recorded tracks and another tour next year, timed for a European summer escape. For now, she’s inviting supporters to her Patreon for behind-the-scenes live videos. “Hear the new stuff early, before it’s even released.”
