Emily

An insightful & mercurial biographical, yet fictional, portrayal of Emily Bronte. Not just strictly for avid fans of the iconic author.

Frances O’Connor’s fresh take on Emily felt quite modern in her depiction of the author’s short, but thrilling life. The film covers her early years leading up to writing & publishing her acclaimed novel, Wuthering Heights, with much use of the ghostly moors to backdrop the story. We follow the protagonist’s journey through a great love affair, experiences battling mental health, social status & heartbreak.

As the black sheep of the family, we empathise with her inability to follow in her sisters’ footsteps as a teacher. Upon returning home, we witness clear emotional neglect from her father who favours her other siblings.

Falling into forbidden love Emily ultimately assumes the role of a recluse, hiding her affair from her family while searching for her purpose & meaning through her writing. Only through her ultimate death is she truly appreciated by the people in her world, a sad but telling ending, reflecting the experience of the real Emily Bronte.

A fascinating watch.
